Taking their first-ever dip into the state playoff pool, the Nauset football team will hit the road to face a familiar opponent on Friday night, as they face fellow Atlantic Coast League member Plymouth North in the opening round of the Div. 3 South sectional playoffs.

The Warriors defeated Durfee 21-14, on the road last weekend in what coach Keith Kenyon called “a character win” for the team, which qualified them for the postseason in the inaugural season of the state playoff format.

After opening their season with three straight wins, none bigger than a win over rival Dennis-Yarmouth, the Warriors fell in their next three, including a tight loss to Marshfield and Friday’s opponent Plymouth North.

During their loss to Marshfield three weeks ago, senior Jimmy Sullivan broke his hand, which has limited the Nauset offense, forcing a much more one-dimensional approach on offense.

“It wasn’t our best performance but we found a way to win (against Durfee),” said Kenyon, who said the loss of Jake Nickerson for the season has also been a blow to the team.

“But we’re adapting; Tommy Westcott has done a great job stepping in at linebacker in place of Jake.”
“I give this team a lot of credit. They show up every practice in good spirits and ready to work hard.”
Calling it a “major accomplishment as a program,” to make the postseason, Kenyon sad the win over Durfee last week was the perfect way to enter the playoffs.
“It’s a new season now, a fresh start, and this team is more than ready for it.”
It’ll also mark the first time Kenyon has seen a team for the second time in a season.
The Warriors were rolling along until their 27-21 loss to Marshfield, followed by losses to Plymouth South at home and Plymouth North on the road the following week.
Nauset secured the sixth seed following their 4-3 season. If they can advance, they’ll face the winner of the Dighton-Rehoboth/Somerset-Berkley game next week.
If they fall to PN, they be placed into a pool of non-qualifying D3 Southeast teams to play out their final few weeks before their annual Thanksgiving Day game against DY.
