Imagine the shock of growing up in a loving family with people you call "Mum" and "Dad" and then, suddenly, learning that you are actually adopted!

This same sense of shock came as scientists announced that the Sun, the Moon, our planet and its siblings, were not born into the familiar band of stars known as the Milky Way galaxy, but we actually belong to a strange formation with the unfamiliar name of the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy!

Ich wußte von den Veränderungen, die die Planeten unseres Systems durchlaufen. Und mir war klar, dass hierin auch die Ursache für die Veränderungen unseres Erdklimas liegt. Nun habe ich mit der Durchdringung zweier Galaxien noch das fehlende Puzzlestück.
Hängen möglicherweise auch die seit den 90ern beobachteten Gammastrahlenausbrüche damit zusammen? Ich poste das hier mal auf englisch, wer Übersetzung braucht, sagt bitte bescheid.

A very strong Gamma Ray Burst (GRB = highly charged particles at almost light speed) preceeded the December 2004 Tsunami at Sumatra. Some 16 Gamma Ray Bursts bombarded our solar system and planet, with ultra-high order energy, spanning over one month to hurricane Katrina.... Seven of these pulses within 10 days of Katrina.

A new kind of cosmic explosion has been spotted in Earth's celestial neighbourhood, and amateur astronomers in the Northern Hemisphere might be able to see it next week, scientists reported today. The blast seemed a lot like a gamma-ray burst, the most distant and powerful type of explosion known to astronomers. But when scientists first detected it with Nasa's Swift satellite on February 18, the explosion was about 25 times closer and lasted 100 times longer (remark: it lasted for 2000 seconds) than a typical gamma-ray burst.

"This is totally new, totally unexpected," said Neil Gehrels, Swift's principal investigator. "This is the type of unscripted event in our nearby universe."
